Specialist management of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, and vasculitis with targeted therapies to preserve function.
Joints, Muscles & Autoimmune Care
Rheumatic diseases are a diverse group of conditions characterised by inflammation and dysfunction of the joints, muscles, and connective tissues often driven by an overactive immune system that attacks the body's own structures. Rheumatoid arthritis, the most common autoimmune arthritis, affects 1% of the global population. Systemic lupus erythematosus, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, vasculitis, and myositis are among the other conditions managed by rheumatologists. These are chronic, complex diseases that require long-term specialist oversight, careful drug management including immunosuppressive and biologic therapies, and close monitoring for systemic complications.
MNR Hospital's Rheumatology Department provides specialist care for patients with inflammatory arthritis, autoimmune connective tissue diseases, and crystal arthropathies including gout. Our rheumatologists perform detailed clinical assessment supplemented by immunological testing, imaging, and joint aspiration when required. We administer conventional disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and have an established biologic infusion unit for patients requiring intravenous biologics such as rituximab, infliximab, and tocilizumab. Joint aspiration and intra-articular injection services are available within the department for immediate relief and diagnostic sampling.
Many patients with rheumatic conditions are diagnosed in their most productive years. Our rheumatology programme is designed not just to suppress disease activity but to help patients maintain employment, relationships, and independence. Physiotherapy referral, occupational therapy for joint protection, nutritional guidance, and patient education groups are all part of an integrated care approach that addresses the whole impact of these diseases on a patient's life.
