Expert diagnosis and management of lung and respiratory conditions from asthma and COPD to complex sleep disorders and critical respiratory failure.
Lung & Respiratory Care
Pulmonology is the medical specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the lungs, airways, and the entire respiratory system. It is one of the most critical specialties in modern medicine because breath is not optional. Conditions ranging from common asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to rare interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary hypertension, and sleep-disordered breathing all fall under the scope of a skilled pulmonologist.
What makes pulmonology particularly vital today is the rising burden of respiratory disease — driven by air pollution, tobacco use, occupational exposures, and most recently, post-COVID complications. Modern pulmonology is equipped with highly sophisticated tools: high-resolution CT imaging, endobronchial ultrasound, navigational bronchoscopy, and digital polysomnography — enabling clinicians to diagnose conditions that were once missed or mismanaged.
The Department of Pulmonology at MNR Hospital was built to address the significant and growing respiratory healthcare burden across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. Coastal Karnataka's climate, industrial zones, and high rates of tobacco use create a population with a significant prevalence of chronic respiratory conditions. Our pulmonology team of six specialists brings expertise in both acute respiratory failure requiring ventilator support and long-term outpatient management of complex lung diseases.
Our department features a fully equipped sleep laboratory for overnight polysomnography, a comprehensive pulmonary function testing suite, and fibre-optic bronchoscopy with BAL capability. Our respiratory ICU has advanced ventilatory support including high-flow nasal oxygen, non-invasive ventilation (BiPAP/CPAP), and full mechanical ventilation ensuring that critically ill patients receive the level of care previously only available in Mangalore's larger city hospitals.
Living with a chronic lung condition is about far more than medication. At MNR Hospital, our pulmonology team runs structured pulmonary rehabilitation programmes for COPD and post-COVID patients, integrating exercise physiology, breathing retraining, and nutritional support. We also run a dedicated smoking cessation clinic because no intervention improves respiratory outcomes as powerfully as stopping tobacco. We believe that with the right care, education, and support, our patients can breathe better, live fuller lives, and stay out of the emergency room.
Chronic airway inflammation causing reversible breathlessness and wheeze.
Progressive airflow limitation from tobacco or dust exposure.
Recurrent airway collapse during sleep causing dangerous oxygen dips.
Fluid accumulation around the lungs requiring drainage.
Scarring and inflammation of lung tissue.
Bacterial, viral, or fungal infection of the lung parenchyma.
Elevated pressure in the pulmonary circulation.
Persistent respiratory symptoms following COVID-19 infection.
Our pulmonologists combine clinical depth with a compassionate approach managing everything from routine asthma reviews to complex ventilator-dependent patients.
If you have a persistent cough, unexplained breathlessness, or snoring that disrupts your sleep — don't ignore it. Our pulmonology team is here to help.
