About the Department

Diagnosis Starts in the Laboratory

Pathology is the medical specialty that forms the diagnostic foundation of modern medicine. Approximately 70% of all clinical decisions including which diagnosis to make, which treatment to prescribe, and whether a patient is responding to therapy are informed by laboratory test results. Clinical pathology encompasses the full range of laboratory disciplines: clinical biochemistry for metabolic and organ function tests, haematology for blood disorders, microbiology for infection diagnosis, immunology and serology for autoimmune and infectious disease, cytology and histopathology for tissue diagnosis of cancer and other diseases. Without a strong, reliable pathology department, clinical excellence in every other specialty is severely compromised.

Pathology at MNR Hospital

MNR Hospital's Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Department is NABL-accredited the national accreditation benchmark for diagnostic laboratory quality. We operate an automated, high-throughput core laboratory for routine biochemistry, haematology, coagulation, and urine analysis with turnaround times of under 2 hours for most tests. Our microbiology section performs culture and sensitivity testing with rapid antibiotic susceptibility reporting, supporting our antimicrobial stewardship programme. The histopathology and cytopathology section processes surgical specimens, FNAC samples, and biopsy material with same-day or next-day frozen section reporting for intraoperative cancer margin assessment. The immunology section offers a broad autoimmune serology panel including ANAs, ANCA, and complement studies.

Quality, Speed, and Clinical Context

Our philosophy is that a laboratory report is not a number on a page it is a clinical message. Our pathologists actively engage with clinicians to provide interpretive comments, flag critical values immediately, and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings for oncology and complex medical cases. This integration of laboratory expertise with bedside clinical thinking is what distinguishes a great pathology department from a merely adequate one.
