Eye Care & Vision Health
Vision is the sense we rely on most for safety, independence, work, and connection. Ophthalmology is the medical specialty dedicated to preserving and restoring sight, managing everything from the most common refractive errors requiring glasses to complex surgical conditions affecting the lens, retina, cornea, optic nerve, and orbit. Diseases like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration are leading causes of preventable blindness worldwide preventable precisely because they respond to early detection and timely treatment. A strong ophthalmology department is not a luxury for a multi-specialty hospital; it is a public health imperative.
MNR Hospital's Ophthalmology Department provides the full spectrum of eye care services from a modern, purpose-built eye care unit. Our diagnostic capabilities include slit-lamp examination, automated visual field testing, fundus photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and A/B scan ultrasonography. Our surgical theatre is equipped for phacoemulsification cataract surgery with foldable IOL implantation, trabeculectomy for glaucoma, vitreoretinal surgery, and strabismus correction. We run dedicated clinics for diabetic eye screening an essential service given the high prevalence of diabetes in our community and a paediatric ophthalmology and squint clinic for children.
Many blinding conditions are entirely preventable with regular screening. We advocate strongly for annual eye examinations in all diabetic and hypertensive patients, as well as those above 40 years of age. Our low vision rehabilitation services and optical dispensary ensure that patients with residual vision impairment receive the optical aids and support they need to maintain independence.
