Surgical Care Across Disciplines
General surgery encompasses a wide range of surgical conditions affecting the abdomen, gastrointestinal tract, skin and soft tissue, breast, thyroid, and hernia. It is both the most commonly performed surgical specialty and the foundation of surgical training for all sub-specialties. The revolution of laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery over the past three decades has transformed general surgical practice procedures that once required a large incision and a week in hospital can now be performed through tiny ports with patients going home the same day. Modern general surgery combines technical excellence, clinical judgement, and clear patient communication to deliver safe, effective, minimally disruptive surgical care.
MNR Hospital's General and Laparoscopic Surgery Department is one of the busiest departments on campus, managing a broad caseload spanning emergency and elective procedures. Our laparoscopic suite is equipped for advanced minimally invasive procedures including laparoscopic cholecystectomy, appendicectomy, hernia repair (laparoscopic TEP and TAPP), fundoplication, colorectal resections, and splenectomy. Our surgeons also perform open surgeries for complex cases and emergency abdominal procedures. The breast surgery unit manages benign and malignant breast conditions in collaboration with the oncology team. Thyroid and parathyroid surgery is performed with nerve monitoring to protect the recurrent laryngeal nerve.
We operate a dedicated day surgery unit for selected procedures laparoscopic hernia repair, varicose vein stripping, minor soft-tissue excisions, and diagnostic laparoscopies allowing patients to return home the same day. Our enhanced recovery programme applies evidence-based protocols to minimise hospital stays, reduce pain, and accelerate return to normal function after major abdominal surgery.
